U.S. President Joe Biden has about 22.2 million followers on Twitter, but according to an organization called SparkToro, about half of them are fake. SparkToro is a software company that has an audit tool that considers 49.3 percent of Biden’s followers to be “fake.” This assumption is based on various factors such as location, default profile picture and new users.
SparkToro defines fake followers as “accounts that cannot be accessed and cannot see tweets from the following accounts (either because of spam, bots, propaganda, etc. or they are no longer active on Twitter)”.
Any Twitter user can use the tool to check how many of their followers are fake. NDTV, however, cannot verify the results shown by SparkToro.
Earlier this month, the same tool claimed that 53.3 percent of Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s followers were fake.
Talking about its method, Sparktoro said Freedom“This audit analyzes a sample of 2,000 random accounts from the recent 100,000 accounts that follow Elonmask, then looks at 25+ factors related to spam / bots / low quality accounts.”
Mr Musk, who is currently trying to buy Twitter, has been concerned about fake accounts for the past few weeks. The 44 44 billion deal has been put on hold due to Musk’s claim that the number of fake followers on Twitter is much lower than estimated. CEO Parag Agarwal says 5 percent of all Twitter accounts appear to be fake, but Musk believes that number is much higher, closer to 20 percent.
