Anyone with fur flair? The dog boarded the Japan Bullet Train on a one-day trip

Japan: Pets are allowed in Shinkansen but must be kept inside a holder.

Tokyo:

On Japan’s bullet train, dogs usually have to travel in a carrier, but on Saturdays they can stretch their paws and enjoy the view of a special pet-friendly express.

At Tokyo’s Ueno Station, 21 hairy passengers boarded a smooth Shinkansen train with their owners for an hour’s drive to the town of Karuizawa Resort.

“We’re just kidding,” Yukari Seino, 48, told AFP as Chobi held her seven-month-old Chihuahua comfortably in her lap.

“We travel a lot together, but in the past I’ve felt bad for keeping my dog in a cage,” he said, adding that the trip was still stress-free.

The other four-legged day trippers on board the first “Doggy Holiday” service operated by Japan Railways include the Pomeranian, a terrier and a fine-eared, cheerful-looking Shiva Inu.

“It looks like we’re at home. I’m glad we can get on the train without any worries,” said Yoko Okubo, 39, who joined the trip with his staff.

Pets are allowed in Shinkansen but they must be kept in a container and their total weight including cage should not exceed 10 kg (22 lb).

Saturday’s visit was dedicated to a whole car poaching, a pilot project organized by railway company JR East and its affiliate JR East Startup.

They are looking forward to organizing more regular pet-friendly trips in the future, start-up official Shino Furukawa told AFP.

“We have received requests from customers who want to spend a comfortable time with their dog on the train,” he said.

“We want to create an environment where people can get along with their pets, who are part of the family. This is a big step towards making pet-friendly public transport a reality.”

Japanese trains are famous for being spotlessly clean, and one of the biggest challenges was maintaining impeccable standards on board, he said.

Staff put plastic covers on all seats and brought four air purifiers to the car, which will remove all dog hair after the trip.
