A U.S. lawmaker has accused Davos of failing to salute the Ukrainian leader in a speech and leave the room.
China has accused US Congressman Michael McCall of distorting information after a Beijing delegation at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos refused to applaud a speech by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and left the room unreservedly.
During a live appearance on CNN on Monday, McCall showed a picture of Chinese delegates seated while the rest of the audience stood and congratulated Zelensky, who addressed the event via a video link.
The Beijing delegation then left the room, thus “Sending a clear message that they do not support Ukraine.” Republican lawmakers insisted.
China responded to McCall’s demand on Tuesday, the congressman said “Information Distortion and Location Defamation” Of the delegation.
The Chinese delegation in Davos explained to the Xinhua news agency that the Ukrainian leader was holding talks with Fatih Biral, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, when he was speaking.
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began in late February, Beijing has refused to condemn Moscow or join international sanctions against it, despite pressure from the United States and its allies.
Beijing has said it believes neighbors should settle their differences at the negotiating table. China has also identified Washington as a “criminal and major instigator of the Ukraine crisis” over its propaganda for NATO expansion toward Russia’s borders.
