The United States is “playing with fire,” the Chinese state council’s Taiwan affairs office said Monday, after President Joe Biden promised to protect the self-governing island in an attempt to take control of Beijing, state media reported.

Zhou Fenglian, a spokesman for the office, said the United States was “using the ‘Taiwan card’ to contain China and would burn itself out.”

Biden’s remarks earlier in the day came amid growing tensions over Taiwan’s issue, its strongest to date, and China’s growing economic and military power.

State outlet Xinhua said Zhu “called on the United States to refrain from any comments or actions that violate previously established policy between the two countries.”

Asked on Monday if Washington was willing to be militarily involved in defending Taiwan, Biden replied: “Yes.”

“That’s what we promised,” he said.

The U.S. president spoke in Tokyo, where he is meeting with the Japanese prime minister ahead of a regional summit on Tuesday.

Allies such as Washington and Japan have reacted sharply to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, warning others, especially China, against unilateral military action.

China’s Taiwan Affairs Office falls under its State Council, which is often described as the country’s cabinet.
