The country’s president has asked why it supports the territorial integrity of western Ukraine but not Serbia
Serbian President Aleksandar Vusic said:CourageWhile he hears Western nations talking about their respect for Ukraine’s territorial integrity, Serbia is pushing for the independence of the breakaway region of Kosovo.
During a Sunday broadcast on Prova TV, Vusik claimed that there was no policy in modern international politics and accused the West of double standards and hypocrisy in the Ukraine-Kosovo conflict. Serbia is a candidate for EU membership.
Belgrade does not recognize Kosovo’s 2008 declaration of independence and considers the area a Serbian province. About 100 countries, including the United States – but not Russia – have recognized the region’s independence.
“My courage turns when I hear the principle of territorial integrity and respect. They (Western countries) tell us to respect someone’s honesty, and what will happen to us?Vusik says.
Since the G7 has promised that it will never accept a violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, the Serbian government will continue to insist on the same policy for its own country, Vusik argued.
“To give up his integrity for Serbia, it can only happen with a gun to the forehead, and not for us, for our children,“He insisted.
The Serbian leader further questioned, if Russia has indeed committed heinous crimes in Ukraine, then why is NATO not bombing like the former Yugoslavia in 1999?
Russian President Vladimir Putin said last month that Moscow’s move to recognize the breakaway republics of Donetsk and Lugansk was based on Kosovo’s precedent.
Russia invaded its neighboring country in late February, following Ukraine’s failure to implement the terms of the first Minsk agreement, signed in 2014, and the final recognition of the Donetsk republics of Moscow and Donetsk of Lugansk. The German- and French-brokerage protocols were designed to give special status to isolated territories within the Ukrainian state.
The Kremlin has since demanded that Ukraine formally declare itself a neutral state that will never join the US-led NATO military bloc. Kyiv has insisted that the Russian invasion was completely unpopular and has denied claims that it is planning to forcibly retake the two republics.
Belgrade has taken a neutral stance on the conflict, promising to punish the Vusk Serbs if they try to fight on either side.
