The former president made a mistake in criticizing Russia’s military action

As president, Bush launched the invasion of Iraq in 2003, which quickly toppled the government in Baghdad and led to a prolonged military coup. Before ousting Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, the Bush administration repeatedly claimed that Baghdad had not abandoned its efforts to build weapons of mass destruction since the 1991 Gulf War. These claims were later proven wrong, however, as US forces failed to uncover ongoing WMD projects despite intensive inspections.
More than 19 years later, about 2,500 U.S. troops remain in the country, although they are now playing a non-combat role with the permission of local authorities. In March, General Frank McKenzie – then head of US Central Command (CENTCOM) – warned that the US military presence would not end soon, citing alleged threats from Iranian-backed militia groups.
