Luxury label Gucci and sportswear firm Adidas AG are heading into China to sell umbrellas for 11,100 yuan ($ 1,644), which doesn’t even stop the rain.
Don’t assume that some brands say it wasn’t designed to do that.
The hashtag “Cooperation umbrella sold for 11,100 yuan is not waterproof” has garnered more than 140 million views on the social media site Weibo.

The post focuses on a claim that parasols do not block rain, but should instead be used as a shade from the sun and for fashion purposes. The product was originally classified as an umbrella but changed to a more obscure word in Mandarin.
Representatives from Adidas and Gucci could not immediately be reached for comment.
Luxury brands have faced increased scrutiny in China amid widespread reaction to Chinese President Xi Jinping’s “general prosperity” campaign, which sank related stocks last year. More broadly, Western brands such as Adidas have struggled with increasing nationalism that has led to boycotts and preferential treatment for local companies.
