New Delhi has reported the successful test of a 450-kilometer BrahMos missile developed from a Russian Sukhoi fighter jet.
The Indian Air Force successfully conducted a missile test on Thursday when one of its Russian-made Sukhoi fighter jets from the Tiger Sharks Squadron took off from Thanjavur airport in Tamil Nadu, refueling mid-air and then launching an aircraft. The long-range BrahMos missile hit a designated target in the Bay of Bengal, the military said.
The original BrahMos non-nuclear missile has a range of 290 kilometers, it can be launched from land, air and sea and can travel three times faster than the speed of sound. Meanwhile, the extended-range version of the same BrahMos missile has a range of 450 to 500 kilometers.
“This was the first launch of an extended range version of the BrahMos missile from the Su-30MKI aircraft. With this, the IAF has acquired the capability of accurate attack from a Su-30MKI aircraft against a land / sea target over a very long range.” This is stated in the official statement of the Ministry of Defense of India. “The increased range of the missile combined with the high performance of the Su-30MKI aircraft gives the IAF a strategic reach and allows it to dominate future battlefields.”
