A former member of parliament from the Pakistani-born Conservative Party in northern England has been sentenced by a London court to 18 months in prison on Monday for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy in a house more than 13 years ago.

Imran Ahmed Khan, now a former Wakefield MP from West Yorkshire, was convicted last month after a week-long jury trial in London’s Southwark Crown Court. Justice Jeremy Baker said the victim was “deeply emotionally affected” by Khan’s actions during the sentencing.

“You feel the only remorse for the misery you faced 14 years ago as a result of your actions,” the judge said.

However, he said he did not consider Khan’s offense “serious enough to put the attack in the most serious category.”

Earlier this month, Khan formally filed an appeal against his conviction.

During the trial in April, the court was told that Khan forced the boy to drink gin at a party in Staffordshire in 2008, dragged him upstairs, pushed him into a bed and then told him to watch pornography before the attack.

The 48-year-old MP, who denied the allegations, was fired by the Conservative Party when they appeared. He has resigned and a by-election is scheduled for June 23 to elect a new MP in Khan’s former constituency.

The complainant, now 29, said the attack “frightened and shocked” him. The man, speaking on condition of anonymity, contacted the Conservative Party in 2019 when Khan stood in the general election and then contacted the police after Khan was elected to parliament.

Khan, who is a homosexual, denies sexual harassment and claims he only touched the elbow of a Catholic teenager when he was “extremely upset” after a conversation about his perverted sexuality. Then at 34, the politician said he was trying to be “kind” and “helpful” but the teenager became annoyed and “bolted” when the issue of pornography was raised.

In a statement, Khan’s lawyer said the former MP had been “completely and utterly disrespected” by the “high public office”, with the destruction of his life and career, “disgraced and humiliated at every turn”.
