A banknote found at a charity store was recently auctioned online for ,000 140,000 (Rs 1.3 crore). The news is going viral on social media and users are claiming that the rare currency note has sold for almost 1,400 times its original value.

According to The Independent, the £ 100 pound was discovered by Paul Wyman, an Oxfam volunteer, while working at the charity’s Brentwood branch in Essex.

During the British mandate in Palestine in 1927, 100 pound Palestinian pound notes were issued to high-ranking officials.

Savvy Paul, who saw the note, chose not to put it on the shelves and instead called an auction house, which valued it at £ 30,000. But when it went under the hammer at the Spink Auction House in London, it sold for ,000 140,000. The money will go to Oxfam’s charities, The Independent added in their report.

“I realized I was holding something in my hand that was incredibly rare. I couldn’t believe it when it went to 140,000 pounds,” he was quoted as saying by the publication. The banknote was brought to the store by an unknown donor in October 2020 and was valued at the auction house in February of this year.

Mr. Wyman saw the auction on April 26 from his home.

According to Alan Fung, Spink’s banknote expert, “there are reportedly less than ten of these banknotes.”

Lorna Fallon, Oxfam’s retail director, said: “We are really grateful to Paul and the Brentwood Store crew for finding this banknote, as well as to the kind people who have contributed to it for us. This includes helping the famine-stricken people of East Africa and the refugees from Ukraine. “
