London:

The Russian military said on Saturday it had destroyed a large shipment of Western weapons in Ukraine’s Zaitomi region, west of Kiev, using Caliber cruise missiles launched from the sea.

The Defense Ministry said in a statement that the strike was carried out by “a large batch of weapons and military equipment supplied by the United States and European countries” and aimed at Ukrainian troops in the eastern Donbass region where the fighting is concentrated.

Reuters could not independently verify the report, which said Russian missiles hit a fuel depot near Odessa on the Black Sea coast and shot down two Ukrainian SU-25 aircraft and 14 drones.

In the latest update of the war, which Russia has called a “special military operation,” the Defense Ministry said Russia had hit several command posts in Ukraine.

Russia has stepped up arms supplies to western Ukraine since the February 24 invasion, and Russian military forces are trying to block and destroy them. Moscow says the supply of Western weapons to Kiev, and the imposition of tough sanctions on Russia’s economy, is a “proxy war” by the United States and its allies.
