Moscow:

Former Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Canisel, who once danced with Russian President Vladimir Putin at his wedding, has resigned from the board of Russian oil giant Rosneft, the agency said on Monday.

Kennell has submitted a letter of effective resignation since Friday, Rosneft said in a statement.

The 57-year-old made headlines when he invited Putin to his wedding in 2018 and was photographed dancing with him during the event.

He left the Austrian government the following year and joined Rosneft’s board in June last year as an independent director.

Rosneft’s resignation comes after he announced on Friday that former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder was leaving the board after five years, a day after Germany snatched him from public office over ties with Russia.

On Friday, Canisel told AFP he wanted to stay for his one-year mandate but told Rosneft in March that he would no longer seek a term on the board.

Kneissl’s personal website includes a number of interviews with Russia’s state-funded news agency RT, the last two days before Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine on February 24.

In a statement, Rosneft thanked Nielsen for his work in the “complex” international situation and said that it relied on future cooperation with him as an expert.
