The husband of a heroic fourth-grade teacher who died trying to save his students during a massacre at an elementary school in Texas has died of a heart attack.
A GoFundMe page set up by Debra Austin, who said she was the cousin of teacher Irma Garcia, said Irma’s husband, Joe, “died tragically this morning (5/26/2022) of a medical emergency.”
“I truly believe Joe is dead with a broken heart and the love of his life,” he added.
John Martinez, who identified himself as Garcia’s nephew, also tweeted: “I am deeply saddened and deeply saddened to learn that my cousin Irma’s husband, Joe Garcia, has died of grief.”
Local station KABB Fox San Antonio news anchor Ernie Juniga tweeted that Garcia had died of a heart attack.
The couple, who have been married for 24 years, have four children, according to the Rob Elementary School website.
Irma Garcia and her classmate Eva Mireles, who were attached to the classroom, were both shot dead.
The gunman, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, was inside the building for about 40 minutes before police entered and shot him dead.
