Johnny Depp vs. Amber Hard: The jury began deliberations after 6 weeks of testimony

Johnny Depp sued Hard in December 2018 for an op-ed for the Washington Post.

Washington:

A jury began hearing Friday after a six-week trial in a defamation suit between Johnny Depp and his ex-wife, Amber Hard, where there was a rash of mutual allegations of domestic abuse.

A seven-person jury retired to consider the verdict in a high-profile case heard in Fairfax, Virginia, near the U.S. capital, after lawyers from both sides presented their concluding arguments.

Ellen Bradhoft, one of Hard’s attorneys, said the defamation lawsuit filed by Depp against the “Aquaman” star and the propaganda of “global humiliation” made her life a “pure hell.”

“It has ruined his life. It has devoured him. He is receiving death threats,” Bradhoft told the jury.

Benjamin Chew, one of Depp’s lawyers, countered that the 58-year-old “Pirates of the Caribbean” star may not be a “saint” and fought over drugs and alcohol, saying “he is not a violent abuser.”

“He did not deserve his life and he did not deserve it. His legacy was destroyed by a heinous lie,” Chiu said. “Miss Hard’s attempt to portray himself as a heroic survivor, an innocent survivor, and a terrible abuser of Mr Depp is completely false.

“We ask you, we are asking him to return his name, his reputation and his career,” he told the jury.

Bradhoft said any loss in Depp’s career was self-inflicted.

“Blame this guy,” he told the jury. “She has never been responsible for anything in her life.

“He blames everyone in the world – his agents, his managers, his lawyers, Amber, his friends, everyone.”

Depp’s lawyer Chiu, meanwhile, referred to the #Metoo movement but said, “It’s really about surviving abuse, not Miss Hard.”

“No one came to say ‘me’ from woodwork. This is a unique and unique ‘me to’ case where there is no ‘me’.”

Depp’s other attorney, Camille Vasquez, told the jury that the evidence “proved that Miss Hard was an abuser.”

“He was violent, he was abusive and he was cruel,” Vasquez said.

– ‘Monsters’ –

Depp sued Hard for an op-ed for the Washington Post in December 2018, in which he described himself as a “public figure representing domestic violence.”

The Texas-born hardcover did not name Depp, but sued him for being a domestic abuser and seeking $ 50 million in damages.

Hard, 36, has sued for 100 100 million, claiming he suffered “a lot of physical violence and abuse” at his hands.

Dozens of witnesses, including bodyguards, Hollywood executives, agents, entertainment industry experts, doctors, friends and relatives, testified during the trial.

Depp and Hered each spent days witnessing the televised trial, with hundreds of “Pirates” star fans in attendance and the #JusticeForJohnnyDepp campaign on social media.

The jury played video and audio recordings of heated, obscene arguments between the couple, which also showed images of injuries allegedly suffered by Hard during their troubled relationship.

During the filming of an installment of “Pirates” in Australia in March 2015, hours of concurrent medical testimony were devoted to the finger injury that Depp was suffering from.

Depp claimed that the tip of one finger was severed when Hard threw a bottle of vodka at him. Hard says he doesn’t know how the injury happened.

They both agreed that Depp had used bloody numbers to scroll through walls, lampshades and mirrors.

Hard said Depp would become a physically and sexually abusive “monster” while consuming alcohol and drugs and would resist his repeated attempts to stop his drinking and drug use.

Depp testified that Hardy was often violent and said it was “brutal” to hear “foreign” allegations of domestic violence against him.

“No man is perfect, of course not, neither are we, but I have never in my life been sexually battered, physically abused,” he said.

– Damaged Hollywood career –

Hard, who was married to Depp from 2015 to 2017, received a restraining order against him in May 2016, citing domestic violence.

Depp, a three-time Oscar nominee, filed a defamation suit against the British tabloid The Sun in London for calling her a “wife-beater”. He lost the case in November 2020.

Both sides have claimed the loss of their Hollywood careers.

Hard’s legal team has presented an entertainment industry expert who estimates that the actress lost চলচ্চিত্র 45-50 million for lost movie and TV roles and approvals.

An industry expert hired by Depp says the actor has lost millions due to allegations of abuse, including a possible বেতন 22.5 million salary for the sixth installment of “Pirates”.
