Ukrainian lawmakers have raised a bill that seeks to deprive citizens of citizenship if they leave the country under martial law.
In a bill registered in the Ukrainian parliament on Tuesday, lawmakers proposed several amendments to the law, defining the rule of law under martial law. “Strengthen the country’s economy and defense capabilities.”
One of the proposals suggests that anyone responsible for military service may be deprived of Ukrainian citizenship if they leave the country and do not return within 30 days.
This measure will apply to those who have left and not returned without a valid reason, such as a ban on leaving the host country, natural disasters, accidents, business trips, official work abroad, hospitalization or other circumstances preventing a person from returning home. .
The bill further states that the measures will be extended to those who have fled to the Russian Federation during the ongoing military conflict between Moscow and Kiev and to those who have refused in writing to convene.

On Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a 90-day decree extending martial law and conditions of general mobility in the country, which is now awaiting approval from Ukraine’s Supreme Council.
Under Ukrainian martial law, men between the ages of 18 and 60 are prohibited from leaving the country and all citizens responsible for military service must participate in the general solidarity of all reserve forces.
On February 24, Ukraine imposed martial law, following Russia’s invasion of the neighboring state, Kiev’s failure to implement the terms of the first Minsk agreement signed in 2014, and the final recognition of the Donbas republics of Moscow, Donetsk and Lugansk. The German- and French-brokered Minsk protocol was designed to give special status to isolated territories within the Ukrainian state.
The Kremlin has since demanded that Ukraine formally declare itself a neutral state that will never join the US-led NATO military bloc. Kyiv has insisted that the Russian invasion was completely unpopular and has denied claims that it is planning to forcibly retake the two republics.
