The Chinese foreign minister told the UN human rights chief that he hoped his historic visit to Xinjiang would help “clear up misinformation” before his visit.
During a meeting with Michelle Bachelet on Monday, Wang expressed “hope that the visit will help increase understanding and cooperation and clear up misinformation,” a Foreign Ministry readout said.
Wang told Bachelet that Beijing “has made the protection of the rights of ethnic minorities an important part of its work and has made the protection of its people a long-term goal,” according to the statement.
“To advance the international cause of human rights, we must first … refrain from politicizing human rights,” he said.
Bachelet is expected to visit the cities of Urumqi and Xinjiang in Kashgar on Tuesday and Wednesday as part of a six-day visit – the first to China by a top UN rights official since 2005.
Lawmakers in the United States and other Western nations have called China’s ruling Communist Party a “genocide” for capturing more than a million Uighurs and other Muslim minorities in the far west.
Beijing vehemently denies the allegations and calls them “lies of the century.”
